This week, President Trump announced Executive Orders targeting Mexican immigrants and refugees from majority-Muslim countries. While we don’t yet know the full scope of the orders and can’t predict what consequences they will have for our community, we want all of our students, clients, and supporters to trust that Tacoma Community House stands firm in its 107-year-old resolve to make Tacoma a welcoming place for immigrants and refugees.
Moreover, we denounce the false claims and racially-charged rhetoric this administration has used to paint immigrants and refugees as violent criminals and antithetical to American values.
It is pertinent on this day, the Holocaust Day of Remembrance, to remember what can happen when we are complicit in the dehumanization of an entire group based on race, religion, or ethnicity. Jewish Americans—not to mention Japanese Americans, African Americans, Indigenous Americans, and too many others—know the history well.
The reality is that immigrants and refugees want what every U.S. citizen wants: a chance to earn a living wage and ensure the safety and well-being of their loved ones. We will continue doing our part to ensure this, the simplest iteration of the American Dream, is within reach of all people.
We ask you to stand with us.
