- Eligibility to Apply Be at least 18 years old by the date you file
Have been lawful permanent resident for at least five years (or three if married to a US citizen)
Have been present in the US for 2.5 of the past five (1.5 of the past three if married to a US citizen) and have not been outside of the US for one year or more within the last five years (or not more than three years if married to a US citizen)
Be able to read, write, and speak basic English (see below about exemptions) and pass U.S. history/civics test
50 years of age and have lived in US with LPR for 20 years
55 years of age and have lived in US with LPR for 15 years
65 years of age and have lived in US with LPR for 20 years
