| Volunteer with our Education Department Participants in Tacoma Community House’s (TCH) education program seek out our services to learn English so they can work and support their families as they work towards their American dreams; to build basic reading, writing, and math skills that enable them to seek higher education and function in their daily lives; and earn GEDs and gain access to job training and employment. You can either work with individuals, small groups of students or educational professionals to support our programs. Build skills while helping your community become a place where everyone can and does participate.
Opportunities
Tutor
- Tutor individuals in reading, writing, and/or math
- Develop lesson plans
- Teach twice a week for a minimum of two hours weekly
- Record and report hours
Classroom Assistant
- Assist in English as a Second Language or Adult Basic Education programs
- Work in a classroom setting under the direction of an instructor
- Record and report hours
Computer Lab Volunteer
- Greet and assist students as they enter the lab
- Help students in computer lab with class work such as spelling, math, reading, etc
- Meet with lab coordinator as needed to discuss/assess student progress
- Assist with computer lab orientations and lab activities
- Record and report hours
Desired Qualities - Patience and flexibility in working with individuals from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
- Ability to follow through with volunteer commitments
