Read2Me Tutor Orientation

September 23, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Read2Me is a volunteer tutoring program that helps developing young readers reach benchmark reading goals by the end of the 3rd grade. For 45 minutes per week during the school year, tutors pair with 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade students who are below grade-level reading and use a variety of tools/games to help them learn sight words, build their vocabulary, improve comprehension, and discover the joy in reading!

This unique program works within four Tacoma Public Schools: ArlingtonListerMcCarver, and Manitou Park. On-site coordinators are always present during Read2Me sessions to support students and tutors, and to ensure the program mirrors each child’s classroom curriculum.

Did you know…

Reading proficiency by the time a student enters the 4th grade is the most important predictor of high school graduation and career success. By the end of the 3rd grade, students learn the building blocks of reading needed to progress in school. After that, students are no longer learning to read but using their reading skills to learn.

Approximately 1/3 of Tacoma Public Schools’ elementary students are below grade-level reading, so the need for volunteers is great. Read2Me tutors come from many backgrounds—businesses, colleges, faith communities, and many are retirees. Different days and hours are available to meet volunteers’ schedules. Those who are interested in tutoring must participate in a 1.5-hour training at Tacoma Community House (1314 S. L Street, Tacoma, WA 98405) prior to volunteering. Please contact Kelly Furtado to find out when the next training will be held.
